A rare, psilocybin-containing mushroom first described in 1967 by Roy Watling. It is named in honor of the American mycologist Alexander H. Smith, who contributed extensively to agaric taxonomy. It is one of the few members of Conocybe reported to contain psilocybin and psilocin, making it psychoactive, although it is not commonly encountered.

Gymnopilus luteofolius is well-known, but unraveling its taxonomy has been complex. It is part of a group of similar, brightly colored, bitter-tasting Gymnopilus species. An Australasian species described in 1991 by Gastón Guzmán, Chris King and Victor Bandala in 'A new species of Psilocybe of section Zapotecorum from New Zealand’. Psilocybe auklandiae is only found in the region of Aukland, NZ. Interestingly, though it is divergent genetically from P. Zapotecorum from Mexico, it is microscopically identical.

Psilocybe aztecorum has the most storied recorded history of any of the species in the genus. In the 16th century, the Spanish friar Bernardino de Sahagún recorded in his manuscript “Historia general de las cosas de la Nueva España,” or “General History of the Things of New Spain,” the ritual consumption of this species by the Nahua people in Tenochtitlan, calling it Teonanacatl (teotl meaning something like sacred animus, nacatl meaning flesh).

Known by the common name “winter teacher”, Psilocybe caeruleorhiza is a newly described psilocybin-containing mushroom species native to North America and is closely related to P. serbica (Europe) and P. aztecorum (North America). The species name, meaning “blue root” was inspired by the strong blueing reaction of rhizomorphs in culture.

A rare psychoactive mushroom described from India in 1993 by mycologist Gastón Guzmán and colleagues. Psilocybe indica is one of the few Psilocybe formally documented from the Indian subcontinent. It is possible that this species is conspecific with Psilocybe chuxiongensis from tropical China.

All current samples of Psilocybe ingeli are descendent from a single collection made in 2023 by Talan Moult in the Ingeli mountains of South Africa. Alkaloid testing has found it to be on par with, or exceeding P. zapotecorum and Panaeolus cyanescens. It is very vigorous, fast-growing and produces fruits easily under a variety of conditions.
