Psilocybe wayanadensis

Originally collected in Kerala, in southern India, Psilocybe wayanadensis was formally described, along with P. keralensis, in 2002 by K.A. Thomas, Manim. & Guzmán in the journal Mycotaxon.

Description

  • Pileus (Cap): 10-55 mm diam., convex, becoming applanate to slightly depressed, with a small acute umbo at the centre, smooth, glabrous, slightly sticky when moist, translucent-striate towards margin, initially brownish grey, brownish orange or greyish brown, uniformly turning to greyish brown with brownish grey umbo sometimes greyish yellow, greyish orange, brownish orange, or light brown towards centre, pale yellow or greyish yellow towards margin with olive brownish grey umbo, hygrophanous; margin decurved, becoming plane, entire, sometimes becoming eroded or fissile. Context up to 4 mm thick, whitish or concolorous with the pileus surface.
  • Lamellae (Gills): Adnexed to sinuate, initially greyish yellow, orange grey or brownish orange, becoming greyish brown to brown, close, up to 7 mm wide; edge pale, entire.
  • Stipe (Stem): 20-80 x 2-10 mm, central, terete, hollow, orange white or greyish yellow, smooth, with a superior, membranous, white annulus; base enlarged, with strigose basal mycelium.
  • Spore print: Dark brown.

Microscopic Features

  • Spores: 8-9.5 (-11) x 6.5-7 (-8) x (5-) 5.5-6 (-6.5) um, lenticular, subrhomboidal in face-view, ellipsoid in side-view, pale brownish or pale violet-brown, smooth, thick-walled, apically truncated by a germ-pore.
  • Basidia: (21.5-) 26-28 (-34) x 7-9 (-10) um, subventricose or cylindric to clavate, hyaline, 4-spored; sterigmata up to 4 um long.
  • Pleurocystidia: (16-) 18-30 (-34) x (7-) 9-12 (-14.5) um, hyaline, thin-walled, subventricose, with an acute apex and narrow base, often with a subgelatinous secretion at the apex.
  • Cheilocystidia: (11-) 13-21 (-26.5) x (5- ) 6-9 (-12) um, subventricose, ventricose-fusoid or sublageniform, thin-walled, hyaline, with an acute or obtuse apex, often with a subgelatinous secretion at the apex.

Ecology & Distribution

  • Habitat: On soil/leaf litter and sometimes in association with disturbed ground/wood debris in the region where it was collected. Original collection made in soil rich with wood chips.
  • Range: Tropical/subtropical locales in Kerala, Wayanda district, India.
  • Season: July to October.

HOW TO UTILIZE MYCOTRUE VIALS - (see video below)

  1. Remove syringe and syringe filter from packaging.
  2. Attach syringe filter to syringe.
  3. Draw plunger to fill syringe with air.
  4. Remove syringe filter from syringe.
  5. Attach needle to syringe.
  6. Shake vial vigorously.
  7. Remove cap from vial.
  8. Insert needle through top of vial, into air space above the solution.
  9. Inject an amount of air equal to the amount of solution you wish to draw.
  10. Invert vial and release pressure on plunger to draw out solution
  11. Turn upright and remove syringe from the vial.
  12. Cap syringe.
