Habitat: Horse dung in grass fields

Climate: Cool, temperate (45-60ºF)

Psilocybe hispanica is a new species discoverd by Ignacio Seral Bozal and described in 2000 by Mexican mycologist Gastón Guzmán. It is only known from the Pyrenees mountain range in northern Spain and southwestern France elevations of 1,700 to 2,300 m. This mushroom was found growing on horse dung in grass fields next to patches of Psilocybe semilanceata.

Psilocybe hispanica is a coprophilous fungus classified in the section Semilanceata, along with its closest relative Psilocybe semilanceata. There is some debate that this is a variety of P. fimetaria, but it appears to be distinct. We expect that future DNA sequencing will settle the identity.

Psilocybe hispanica is more amenable to cultivation than Psilocybe semilanceata when provided temperatures in the 45-60F range on manure or grain based substrates.

See references below for a 6000 year old mural with a possible depiction of Psilocybe hispanica mushrooms in a cave in Spain, the earliest known depictions of mushrooms.
