Cap: 15-40 mm in diameter, toffee colored fading to buff in age, bluing where damaged

Stem: 60-100 mm, white to buff, bluing intensely when cut.

Gills: Adnate, mottled with reddish-brown spores at maturity.

Spores: 11.5-14 x 8.5-10 microns. Lemon shaped, reddish-brown in deposit

Comments: The RDU is a spontaneous mutation of the Australian strain of Panaeolus cyanescens, where the typically black spores are instead a reddish-brown. In fact, the entire carpophore lacks any trace of black pigmentation. The result is a mushroom with an attractive toffee colored cap instead of the normal grey tones.

The spore deposits with this strain are generally not as dark as compared to some others, but the larger than average spore print diameter compensates for this somewhat. The missing dark pigment helps increase the visibility of the finer details of the spores under the microscope.

This strain first came to light when Blue Helix noticed a few specimens of unusual red gilled mushrooms growing in a tray of Australian P. cyanescens. Specimens with the red gills were generously provided in the hopes that the mutation could be recovered and perpetuated.
