Strain Origin: Cape Cod, Massachusetts, USA

Cap: 5-20 cm in diameter, up to 40 cm when cultivated. Obtusely bell-shaped or convex becoming plane in age. Color variable: wine-red to purple-brown when young, fading to tan or straw-color with age and exposure to full sun.

Stem: 7-25 cm in length, 1-7 cm thick, white or yellowish in age. Membranous veil with distinctive grooves or lines in the upper surface.

Gills: Attachment adnate or notched, crowded. White coloration at first soon grayish to purple-black with spore maturity.

Spores: Dark purple-brown to black, elliptical and smooth, 10-15 by 6-9 micrometers on 4-spored basidia.

Comments: A proven fruiting strain isolated from this collection is available in culture form.
