Panaeolus (Copelandia) cyanescens : Jalisco var. Megasporus Spore Print Microscopy Kit
Habitat: Bovine dung
Climate: Tropical/subtropical

Strain Origin: Jalisco, Mexico ? Cactu collection

Cap: 6-13 (17) mm in diameter. Pins are pale yellowish brown maturing to grayish white, bluing where damaged

Stem: (40) 80-110 mm long by 1-2 mm thick, bluing where damaged

Gills: Adnexed with 3 to 4 tiers of intermediate gills.

Spores: 12.5-16 microns, black in deposit.

Comments: This sample keys out to Panaeolus cyanescens but with unusually large and more elliptical spores compared to other Copelandia samples examined. Ola?h (1969) gives the spore size of P. cyanescens as 12-14 microns and Gerhardt (1996) increased the range to 12-15 microns with 17 micron spores being produced on the occasional 2-spored basidia. No 2-spored basidia were observed in this sample and spores around 16 microns were commonly found. The carpophores are small and relatively slow to mature. This sample is very close to its wild origins and is noted as doing only modestly well in culture. Our technicians have nicknamed this sample ?Megasporus rex? for its relatively large spores.
